I've started to play WoW again, at least on a casual basis, doing random heroics and thereby I happened to need a character planner. So after quite a while i myself used chardev and even though I noticed some minor calculation errors, the not noteworthy kind, I was pleased that it is fulfilling it's purpose as a tool showing the impact of changed gear/gems/etc. on your stats. Chardev is not RAWR-like nor is it supposed to be, i guess there is a market for both kinds of tools.
However, at the moment I'm not quite sure if there'll be a new chardev with cataclysm. Needless to say, the severe changes in the game mechanics/stats result in rather extensive changes within the WoW game files and thereby make a (nearly complete) recode of chardev's core inevitable. As I'm lucky to have a beta account, i started right away, but it's just a lot work and blizzard isn't making it easy. Okay, they never did and why should they? The problem are not the difficulties but the impossibilities. I figured the SpellScaling out (at a time even WoWHead didn't get it entirely right) and created a beta talent planner. Yesterday after nearly two weeks of real work (no not the kind you get money for, i mean the kind where you get your hands dirty and drown you physical exhaustion in alcohol) I wanted to start with the items, the new stats, the unified armor/damage values etc. First the beta servers are down for two days and now the ItemCache.wdb files are gone and instead there is a Item-spare.adb, which is not only sparse but also volatile, as it is overwritten every time you logout. The uploaded ItemCache files were the basis of the chardev item database, they contained all items ever (at least till the last patch) seen in game. With the new Item-spare.adb I'm not sure how to maintain an up-to-date item database. Needless to say, without an item database chardev is very very useless... So far, LeMartin |

Thank you for this update. I hope everything will work out fine in the end for you.
I really appreciate the work you have put and are still putting into this. Chardev has been a great tool for me and I know it has been for many others. Regards, Metamorfos |

It's good to hear an update.
For years now, CharDev has been the hub of my character planning. I've tried RAWR at the insistence of friends and guildies, but it really bugs me to leave my gear decisions up to an equation that doesn't take into effect all of the factors that I find important in my playstyle. Excluding fights where I'm tasked with CC or chasing silly things around, I'm consistently the top DPS on every ICC25 Normal and Hard Mode fight; I attribute this partially to doing my own stat weighting, and using CharDev to help predict what changes are needed to min/max everything. Every struggling player that asks me for help is immediately told to come to CharDev and get their plan straight for where they're going, so that they can find a starting place and upgrade paths. In short, I can't thank you enough for this wonderful tool that you've provided the community at large with. I don't have a beta invite, but come Cataclysm I'll be willing to help in any way humanly possible (even via donation) to help your efforts in keeping CharDev going into the future. Best Wishes, - Gnarth (Eitrigg US) |

LeMartin,
I assure you, everyone that uses this magnificent tool really appreciates it and all the hard work that goes into it. Do not feel rushed to have a working Cata model at release. I don't, nor do I think anyone else, expects this to happen and the constant changes to mechanics/gear that take place at launch and for a few patches after is going to make it difficult. Please don't feel obligated to try and keep up with that. We'd much rather see you enjoy the expansion and get around to building a new Chardev at your leisure then see you burn yourself out trying to code a new tool, only to see the mechanics drastically change every patch. Good luck and thank you so much for all the hard work you do to provide this tool |

Take your time, do it right, and all of us who have been using this since before it became popular will appreciate the finished product. Good work takes time, something so few appreciate anymore.
GenerationNow will go to whatever's ready right away, but in the end will be back here when you've got it polished again, because nothing else out there even comes close to what you offer. |

This place is amazing, I don't think I could live without it. It's been the home of all my gear decisions for since before WotLK. My heart sinks thinking that it might not be around in the future. But, regardless of what happens, these past few years were extraordinary. I thank you for that. You've made a difference for a lot of players out there.

Hey, first of all, love the site, it's been invaluable to me for ages now.
I'm not a coder so forgive me if I'm talking out of my ass, but couldn't you basically fetch the items from Blizzard's Armory (or Wowhead, or whatever) instead of the game files? |

Or get someone in the AddOn community at WoWAce or Curseforge to develop an AddOn similar to the one WoWHead uses for collecting info for upload.
